For this year's Fairtrade Fortnight, the theme is The Big Swap. "For two whole weeks we'll be asking you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. This means that every time you go shopping, you can use your wallet to make a stand. Swapping your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff is a brilliantly small step to making the world a fairer place. It means that you get to show your support for developing world producers through what you buy. Two billion people - a third of humanity - survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too." Please do what you can. If you are interested in getting involved with Justice and Peace issues through the group then contact Trish. SAT 27th FEBRUARY: FAIRTRADE FILM EVENT This fairtrade film event involves two films, 'The Great African Scandal' and 'Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts'. 'The Great African Scandal' was first shown on Channel 4 and looks at what Fairtrade means to Ghana. 'Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts' was shown recently on BBC3 and looks at the human suffering behind high street fashion. There will also be a Q&A session with the stars of both films, Dr Robert Beckford and Stacey Dooley. Please note the films are being shown from 12.30pm to 2.30pm at Riverside Studios, Crisp Road, Hammersmith, London W6 9RL. The London 30s started in 2002. Now is a good time to reflect on how things have gone and to see if anything better can be done to help Catholics in their 20s and 30s (and in three other areas – Belfast, Dublin and the North West - there are now 40somethings groups). Before the first group started I was doing a Doctorate on the faith and attitudes of Catholics in their 20s, but was too busy to continue this when the groups started. Before the groups began I did a questionnaire around people in their 20s in parishes asking what they needed and what they would like to see happening for Catholics in their 20s. The replies were nearly all along the lines of masses, retreats, helping the poor etc. Very few social events were mentioned. When I called the first meetings those who were more interested in spirituality didn’t come and people wanted to do more the walks and the meals etc. Only gradually did people say ‘Let’s have a Mass or retreat’. I’ve never wanted to set the agenda, preferring ideas to come from the grassroots, but I feel that there are many people who have come along to Newcomers’ Meetings who have emailed me who are looking for more spiritual development. I’m thinking of doing a questionnaire asking people what else they might ask from Project 2030. If you have any suggestions of questions you could send these to me by email to hugh@project2030.eu , text to 07977 904479 or write to Hugh Hanley SCJ, St John’s, 266 Wellington Road North, Stockport, SK4 2QR. |
